Description
This trail, which starts at the Miradouro das Lagoas vantage point, ends at the Poça do Bacalhau and takes about 3 hours to complete. The trail begins at about 50 metres from the vantage point next to the Caldeira Comprida and follows a footpath through an area which is rich in low-lying endemic plant life. After walking for about 1 kilometre, you will come to a tarmac road, and, right in front lies the Caldeira Seca. After viewing the Caldeira, walk along the road a short way and than take the footpath to your left. There may be puddles or patches of mud on this path, so care should be taken. After about 500 metres, you will come to the Caldeira Branca, which looks like a swamp. Keep going along the footpath and you will come to a dirt path, where you should turn right. Continuing on, cross the bridge over the Ribeira do Ferreiro and then, about 1 kilometre ahead, turn left onto a new footpath which leads towards the cliff. This path has fog signs, which are larger than normal so that they are more easily recognised (see photograph). When you reach the cliff, you should have a lovely view over the Fajã Grande. Go down the fields on the cliff side until you come to a wooden gate to your left, which gives access to a stone stairway. The steps are very steep and may be slippery, so you should take special care. When you reach the fields of the Fajã Grande, follow the path alongside the Ribeira das Casas stream until you reach the Poça do Bacalhau, where the trail ends.
This trail crosses two nature reserves: a Site of Community Interest and a Forest Reserve. It is everyone’s responsibility to contribute towards their protection and to safeguard their biodiversity through the conservation of this natural habitat.
