Description
This trail begins at the foot of Pico do Pedro, climbs up to Pico da Esperança (the highest point on the island of São Jorge: 1053 m), ends at Fajã do Ouvidor and takes around 4 h. It begins on a forest path and climbs Pico do Pedro on the northern slope. Keep to the trail until you come to an arrow marking the track that goes right up to Pico da Esperança. At the summit you can walk round the crater and look into its lake, but be careful, as the path is rough. After visiting Pico da Esperança return to the main track and continue the trail. About 1 km ahead you will see Pico do Carvão, also with a crater at its centre. The trail than starts to descend towards Fajã do Ouvidor. This fajã, or land formed from scree fall and other material falling from the higher slopes, is formed from lava flow, contrary to the more common rock fall areas. It is a large fajã where development has taken place round a small port, a restaurant, a seaside area, etc.
This trail goes through an area classified as a Site of Community Interest and Forest Reserve where we are all responsible for helping to protect the area and for ensuring its biodiversity by conserving this natural habitat.
